Westside Health System is committed to providing high-quality care to everyone, regardless of ability to afford it. As part of that commitment, the hospital system welcomes all people seeking medical attention. "We believe in treating every person like they're one of ours," says Dr. Michael R. Smith, chief executive officer of Westside Health System. "Our doors are open to anyone who wants to come in and see us."
The hospital system is located in the heart of San Diego's West County area, where many residents struggle to find affordable health insurance. "Many families here don't have health coverage," explains Dr. Smith. "They often end up taking out loans just to cover basic needs such as food, rent, utilities and transportation. They're forced to make tough decisions about what else they can afford to spend money on."
In response to this challenge, Westside Health System launched the Westside Family Care Program, a free program that provides comprehensive primary care to uninsured individuals and families. Patients receive preventive screenings, immunizations, flu shots, dental care, vision exams, mental health counseling, nutrition counseling and much more. "This is a great opportunity for us to help those who might otherwise go without needed care," says Dr. Smith. "We want to ensure that no one goes without the care they deserve because of financial constraints."

If you experience sudden pain, redness, swelling, blurred vision, discharge, or loss of sight, it could mean an urgent eye problem. These symptoms often indicate an eye emergency. An eye emergency occurs when there is a threat to your vision. This includes conditions such as infection, trauma, inflammation, bleeding, or foreign objects in the eye.
An eye emergency requires immediate medical attention. Your doctor will examine your eyes, diagnose the cause of the problem, and prescribe treatment. He or she may refer you to an ophthalmologist, optometrist, or emergency room physician. In some cases, surgery may be required.
