The city was founded on March 1st 1824 as part of the Northwest Territory by John Rogers who named it after his hometown of Lafayette, France. In 1825 the town was incorporated into the state of Indiana. It is home to Purdue University, which is one of the largest universities in the United States. The university offers over 200 different degree programs ranging from business to education to engineering.
