The History Of Wilmington, DE

Wilmington, the city that developed from the influx of the Christina River and Brandywine Creek, which fed the Delaware River, is the headquarters of New Castle County. Wilmington is Delaware's largest city and its biggest trade centre and is its main port. Swedes built the first town on the site in 1638, in the valley of the Delaware River, and in 1779 they occupied most of the town. Fort Christina is where the Dutch first established their capital after being attacked by a bandit named Peter Stuyvesant. The Dutch later built a large fortress on the site and burned the remains of the fortress. Dutch, who called the town Altena, were expelled by the English in 1664. Wilmington was a simple hamlet that grew from being an agriculture town to a port town and eventually a bustling market town once Quakers arrived there in the 1730s. Quakers gained a borough charter for the city of Wilmington in 1739, when Penn bought the state. He renamed Wilmington after his friend, the Earl of Wilmington. Wilmington was the most populous city in Delaware at the start of the American Revolution. British forces captured Delaware governor John McKinley in 1777 and seized control of the town. Wilmington quickly developed because of its easy access to the Atlantic Ocean and other important cities, such as Philadelphia, about 40 miles [60 km] away, and because of the plentiful water resources in nearby creeks and farms. Sawmills and gristmills were built on the creek just northeast of Wilmington. Wilmington's flour mills were the biggest in the United States in the mid-1800s. Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, an immigrant from France, started a mill to make powder for use in power plants. He developed the technology to expand the DuPont Corporation into a gigantic company. Wilmington was developed by the completion of the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad in 1837.
